Joe Cross - Episode 021

“Community and support are really important if you are going to make fundamental lifestyle changes”

Juicer. Normal bloke. Author. Filmmaker. Wellness advocate. Netflix Star. Rebooter. Entrepreneur. Educator. Realist. Aussie. Smiler.

It’s amazing what we will put our bodies through before it is almost too late. Our guest this week always had a good, positive outlook on life but the stresses of it got in the way too.

Joe Cross, just sees himself as a normal bloke trying to do his best! It’s this attitude and approach to life, which make people gravitate towards him.

Joe Cross is a seasoned campaigner when it comes to giving talks these days. He is the guy behind the wildly successful documentary called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead which first aired on Netflix in 2010 and has been seen by more than 20 million people.

Joe, was born in Sydney, Australia. His parents moved around a lot when he was young, which made it hard for him to settle. It taught him to wisen up quickly, but then it also meant he succumbed to being bullied a lot too. His saving grace and comfort was sugar, he loved his cereal and even more if it was topped with 5 or 6 heaped tablespoons of sugar!

Joe learnt, discipline and finance from his Grandad when they would place bet’s on the ‘ponies’. At 17, without the required grades to enter University, he started his employment as a Telex Operator and quickly become a trader on the Sydney Futures Exchange. It’s not until he started his own business, 10 years later, when his health started to decline.

Fast forward to 2005 and Joe weighed an astonishing 140kg’s or 310 pounds! During much of this time, he suffered from a condition termed, chronic autoimmune urticaria and was on numerous doses of antibiotics to help him literally just function from day to day.

Desperate and 40, he embarked on his 3,000 mile, 60 day juice and transformation journey across the USA, with a team to help film and support him. These days, Joe maintains a healthy weight, is off all the medication and free of his autoimmune disease. He eats a mostly plant based diet and is now educating our kids by teaching them how to cook recipes, using ingredients they have grown and nurtured themselves.

In the Podcast, we discuss the impact he has had on society, filmmaking, medical conditions, happiness, building a career, disease, A-Z in health and wellness and his plans for making the world a better place in the future.

He has changed so many people’s lives for the better and we think that this chat will add a few more to the list.

We hope you enjoy this conversation and learn as much as we did.

Let’s find out what it means for Joe Cross to be Ridiculously Human.
