Cash is still KING!

The beauty of travelling in Thailand is that cash is still the norm when it comes to paying for things.

I feel in this digital age that so many children are missing out on a solid understanding of money.

There are lots of lessons when using cash:

  • the actual exchange of goods for cash
  • the feel of money in your hands and wallet
  • counting money
  • stealing money from your Dad’s wallet
  • collecting notes and coins from different countries
  • feeling proud that you’ve saved money
  • depositing money in your bank account
  • adding coins to your piggy bank

I make a habit of allowing my daughter to pay at the cashier every time.

  • I give her my wallet to take out the money to pay
  • I ask her to take the change too

There are other subtle lessons for her too

  • She begins to understand there is something sort of value to the exchange of goods.
  • It helps to build her confidence.
  • Improves her communication.
  • Widens her understanding of the world.
  • She becomes curious to what the numbers on notes and coins mean.

Never underestimate what you can teach your child in things that may seem trivial to you.
