A Memorable “Off Day” from Camp Counselling

Some days, you can still ‘feel’

It was the summer of 1999. I was 18 years old, and a little wet behind the ears, even though I had already been living overseas for 5 months.

I lived with about 350 others on this amazing summer camp, called Camp Schodack, in New York State.

We got one ‘off-day’ a week, which were generally quite wild. I still cringe at some of the stupid things I did!

This particular day was in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. We went to the parent’s house of “Joey Ropes,” who was the counsellor for the high ropes. They had this incredible cabin on the lake, where they had speedboats and acres of land to play on.

After a serious night of partying, about 70 of us descended onto his property for the day. All pretty hungover, we quickly washed that off with a swim in the lake. It also helped getting back on the beers and eating a good amount of braai’d (BBQ’d) hot dogs and burgers, to fill our bellies!

We just spent the day going skiing on the lake, swimming, playing various games and exploring the property and Adirondack forest.

Days like these are special ones, which for whatever reason, stay in your memory for longer.
