Banker to Buddhism

Edi Csanalosi and I, discussed her brave journey of self-discovery

Embracing the Path of Transformation: A Journey to Buddhism

Transformation is a powerful concept. As I (Edi) delve deeper into the realms of human behaviour, personal development, and spirituality, I realise there are countless paths to self-discovery. My journey, intertwined with Buddhism, has profoundly reshaped my understanding of life and my place within it.

It all began at a time when I couldn’t see the light within myself. A dear friend of mine, who has been practicing Buddhism for years, became my beacon of hope. Despite her challenges, she exuded wisdom and tranquility that I deeply yearned for. One day, I asked her to teach me her secret. That was the moment my Buddhist practice began.

Initially, I felt lost and exhausted, having run out of resources to better my situation. My friend introduced me to chanting, a fundamental practice in Buddhism. Typically, beginners start with ten minutes of chanting a day. However, I dove in headfirst, chanting for two hours daily, much to the bewilderment of my flatmate. Reflecting on those times, I now understand why this practice was so impactful.

Buddhist chanting allowed me to realise that the power to create a better life lies within me. It wasn’t external forces or divine intervention that would shape my destiny, but my inner strength and determination. As a child, I sought solace in the church, searching for divine help. Yet, I often found that the true saviour was within me. This internal realisation was crystallised through my Buddhist practice, which kept me accountable for my actions, thoughts, and creations.

Over the course of eight years, my dedication to Buddhism bore fruit in ways I hadn’t imagined. Shortly after I began chanting, I yearned to leave my job at RBS and complete a nutrition course I’d paused for six months. Miraculously, within two weeks, I received two job offers from different banks, allowing me to transition smoothly. This period also included an incredible trip to Goa with a friend, and I successfully finished my nutrition course.

These experiences underscored a significant revelation: as I took control of my life, I began inspiring others. My journey towards mastering my life was a beacon for those around me. I started leading small local Buddhist groups, organising events, and fostering a sense of community and belonging. It was a fulfilling and joyous path.

However, my journey was not without its quirks. Being a banker who practiced Buddhism and yoga often felt paradoxical. The incongruity of being a “banker Buddhist” or a “yogi banker” sometimes amused me. But over time, I learned to embrace my authenticity. I didn’t need to fit neatly into any one category. It was liberating to accept and celebrate my unique blend of interests and practices.
